Product Details

Reliable Omron G3NB-240B-1 Solid State Relay for AC Load Switching

The Omron G3NB-240B-1 Solid State Relay is an SSR module used for switching compatible AC loads with a low-voltage DC control signal. This product is marked as an Omron G3NB-240B-1 with a 5–24VDC input, 24–220VAC load output, and 40A rating. It can be used in electronics projects, automation panels, control boxes, 3D printer heated bed systems, enclosure wiring, and other compatible AC load switching applications.

A solid state relay has no moving mechanical contacts. Instead, it uses electronic switching to control the load. This makes an SSR useful where quiet switching, fast response, and long service life are preferred over a mechanical relay. However, SSRs must be installed correctly, wired safely, and cooled properly for the actual load being switched.

5–24VDC Control Input

The input side of this relay is marked for 5–24VDC control. This makes it suitable for compatible DC control circuits, printer control boards, microcontroller outputs, PLC outputs, and automation wiring where the controller output matches the SSR input requirements. Always confirm control voltage, input polarity, and wiring before applying power.

24–220VAC Load Output

The load side is marked for 24–220VAC switching. This means the relay is intended for compatible AC loads within that voltage range. The terminals are marked for load connection, while the input terminals are marked with polarity. Do not use this AC-output SSR for DC load switching unless the exact relay specification confirms DC load compatibility.

40A SSR Rating and Heat Sink Requirements

The Omron G3NB-240B-1 is listed in Omron’s G3NB specifications as a 40A model when used with a suitable heat sink. Omron’s published specification also notes a much lower current limit without a heat sink, so real-world current capacity depends heavily on heat sinking, enclosure temperature, airflow, wiring, and mounting. For heated beds or higher-current loads, proper heat dissipation is not optional.

Useful for 3D Printer Heated Bed Control

Solid state relays are often used in 3D printers to switch AC heated beds from a low-voltage controller output. When used correctly, an SSR can let the printer control a higher-voltage AC bed heater while keeping the controller output on the low-voltage control side. This setup must be wired carefully, fused correctly, grounded properly, and tested before unattended printer operation.

Zero-Cross Solid State Relay Behaviour

The Omron G3NB series includes zero-cross switching models. Zero-cross SSRs switch near the AC waveform zero crossing, which can reduce electrical noise and stress for many resistive AC loads. This type of SSR is commonly used for heater loads, but it still must be matched to the load type and application.

Mounting and Grounding

The product label includes the instruction to earth the mounting rail. This is important because SSR installations may involve AC mains wiring, metal panels, heat sinks, DIN rails, or grounded enclosures. Always follow electrical code, grounding requirements, and safe enclosure practices when installing SSR hardware.

Important Safety Notice

This product may be used in circuits involving AC mains voltage. Installation should only be completed by someone qualified to work with electrical wiring. Incorrect SSR wiring can damage equipment, create shock hazards, overheat components, or create a fire risk. Always use proper fusing, wire gauge, heat sinking, strain relief, grounding, and enclosure protection.

Installation & Care

Installation, Handling & Care

Confirm Electrical Compatibility

Before installing the Omron G3NB-240B-1 Solid State Relay, confirm that your control circuit, load voltage, load current, controller output, and wiring design match the relay rating. This relay is marked for 5–24VDC input and 24–220VAC load output.

Use Proper Heat Sinking

High-current SSRs generate heat during operation. The 40A rating depends on proper heat sinking, mounting, ambient temperature, airflow, and load conditions. Do not run high-current loads without a suitable heat sink and thermal planning.

Fuse the Load Circuit Correctly

Use proper fuse protection or circuit protection for the load being switched. The fuse, wire gauge, terminal blocks, enclosure, and SSR must all be sized for the actual load current and local electrical requirements.

Confirm Input Polarity

The input terminals are marked 3+ and 4-. Confirm polarity before connecting a printer control board, microcontroller, PLC, or other DC output. Incorrect input wiring may prevent operation or damage electronics.

Confirm Load Terminal Wiring

The load terminals are marked 1 and 2. Wire the SSR according to your electrical design and applicable safety standards. Do not leave exposed AC terminals accessible after installation.

Ground the Mounting Rail or Enclosure

The product label notes to earth the mounting rail. When installed in a control panel, machine enclosure, DIN rail setup, or metal cabinet, follow proper grounding practices and local electrical code.

Mount in a Safe Electrical Enclosure

Install the SSR inside a suitable enclosure that protects users from exposed terminals, strain on wires, accidental contact, dust, debris, and mechanical damage. Use strain relief and secure wiring so terminals cannot loosen during machine operation.

Test Before Unattended Operation

After installation, test the SSR under controlled conditions. Monitor relay temperature, load switching, controller behaviour, heater response, and enclosure temperature before using the machine for long prints or unattended operation.

Inspect Periodically

Periodically inspect terminal screws, wiring insulation, heat sink mounting, enclosure ventilation, and signs of overheating. Replace damaged wiring, loose terminals, or overheated components before continued use.

Qualified Installation Recommended

This product may be used with AC mains voltage. Installation should be completed by a qualified person familiar with electrical safety, fusing, grounding, wire sizing, and control panel wiring. Incorrect installation can create shock, fire, or equipment damage hazards.
